Farm Diary 2005

September 2005

Autumn is a beautiful season at Lee House, misty moisty mornings, interspersed with the ‘gunshot’ sound of acorns raining down onto the tin roof of the barn!

Lots to do as usual, sheep to be foot trimmed, cows to be pregnancy tested, fences to be mended, etc, etc!
Lambs and calves have tested every rotten fence post and wire and razed it to the ground or tunneled underneath, yet again re defining free range.

The vegetable area is looking verdant, in part thanks to a carpet of freshly seeded docks! As we cannot spray, we have the monotonous task of digging them all out and burning them! Pain now but hopefully much improvement for next year. Stirling effort by Janet, Abi, Tom & Kate!

Our new breeding pigs have finally arrived and are settling into their temporary accommodation before we put them out into the fields.
The new girls, Annie and Fanny, aka ‘Bubble and Squeak ’ are Middle White gilts! They are hopefully pregnant and will produce our next generation of breeding stock.

Shorter days are coming so hopefully my paperwork pile will shrink slightly as I have to come in earlier from outside! We seem to spend as much time these days preparing for the weekend market as we do farming the land!
