Farm Diary 2005

17th November 2005

Lots and lots going on. Very frosty and cold, preceded by very wet and muddy! Back to the Weald clay wading conditions we know and love.

Pigs are getting fed up with the water drinkers being frozen, so they decide to dismantle drinkers to see what the hold up is! Then the pipes defrost and we have an instant pond on our hands.

We have been inspected by everybody recently; it must be in the stars!

Soil Association, State Veterinary Service, Environmental Health, etc etc. All went away muttering praise rather than threats, so we must be doing something right?

Computer shrugged its shoulders, sighed and rolled over dead last week. BUT not before it had digested all my email addresses and order lists for Xmas!! Eeeek, it was so scary to see that it no longer existed in less than a breath !

New hard drive later and fingers crossed I haven’t forgotten any terribly important order that was stored on the old one.

Anybody who ordered a turkey by email, please confirm by emailing again soon! Sorry in advance!

Lovely email from Louisiana, of all places. Slightly off the local food map but luckily not enquiring about an imminent delivery! It is nice to know we are reaching out that far.

Last week we had an apprentice again, this week he has gone. One day we will get a nice one who might stay just a little longer. Please?

Vegetables are very slow now. Roots and leaves are the order of the day at the moment.
Time to plan for next year and work out how much more we need to plant to satisfy ever increasing demand. Very encouraging.

New (to us) van, new egg box design and new waterproofs; Life is sweet.

Chiller is full of our first Sussex beef, all carefully labelled and hung to perfection, I hope! It certainly smells sweet!

Been trying to get a good picture of the turkeys for the website…impossible because as soon as they see you, they pelt towards you and greet you as long lost turkey person and the camera cannot adjust the focus that rapidly! I had to take a few sneaky shots when they were distracted by the dog!

Off to put the chickens to bed now so no more rambling for now.
